As someone who believes that culinary experiences are just as vital as sun-soaked beaches and turquoise waters, I'm excited to share my top picks for splurge-worthy restaurants in the stunning British Virgin Islands. CaptK and I have visited the British Virgin Islands 15 times. Most of our visits have been exploring this archipelago by sea, both with a captain and crew and as bareboaters.

Since our first visit was in 2009, we have seen the quality and variety of restaurant choices expand greatly in those 16 years. Whether you are staying on land or sea, you will find everything from mouthwatering local seafood to exquisite international cuisine. Get ready to embark on a taste adventure that will tantalize your tastebuds!

This article is organized by island and by accessibility. At the end of the article is a listing of splurge worthy restaurants located in resorts, many of which have marinas or mooring balls for those of you are arriving by charter yacht.

Splurge Worthy Restaurants on Tortola Accessible by Land or Sea

The Dove: Where West Meets East

Located in downtown Road Town, directly across from the street from the ferry terminal, is The Dove one of my favorite spots. Their menu is a beautiful marriage of Caribbean flavors with Asian influences. As soon as I walked through the door, the warm ambiance and elegant decor set the tone for a memorable dining experience. Whether you are enjoying lunch or a cocktail before your ferry leaves, the Dragon Fly Lounge offers beautiful views and ocean breezes.

It is open for lunch from from 12pm-3pm Tuesday to Friday and for happy hour from 5pm - 7pm. Happy Hour can also be enjoyed on their shaded terrace. The Restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm to 10pm. Check on-line for current opening days and hours. They tend to change seasonally.

I have been very impressed with the quality of asian food you can find in the British Virgin Islands. Don't miss their duck confit dumplings, they did not disappoint! The flavor explosion alone was worth the price tag. Their creative cocktails paired perfectly with these delicious bites. And my choice for dessert, the Dove Brownie with both dark and white chocolate and topped with sea salt caramel. Pure bliss!

Brandywine Estate: Island Elegance

For a fine dining experience with an island twist, Brandywine Estate in Tortola never disappoints. Standing above the Sir Francis Drake channel, you are treated to breezy trade winds and colorful sunsets as you dine. Recently, they added mooring balls to Brandywine Bay. They are free to use, including overnight stays, when you are dining at the restaurant. Regis and Claudine Bourdon are co-owners and partners. The kitchen magic is created by Regis who apprenticed and perfected his culinary skills in the South of France. The front of the house is lovingly watched over by Claudine.

The ambiance is upscale yet relaxed, creating the perfect atmosphere for their delicious Mediterranean cuisine. My favorite dish is the Paella Royale, a traditional Spanish paella topped with grilled lobster. I have heard their paella described as the best meal in the British Virgin Islands. The seasonal menu contains entrees made with meat, fish and vegetables including Lamb Osso Bucco, Pappardelle with Wild Mushrooms and Lobster Risotto. I marveled at the way the chef elevated simple ingredients into a culinary masterpiece. Don’t skip dessert here – the Apple Tart aLa Mode is a little slice of heaven!

Splurge Worthy Restaurants on Virgin Gorda Accessible by Land or Sea

The Restaurant at Leverick Bay: Savory Seafood Delights

Next up is The Restaurant at Leverick Bay, located in the gorgeous North Sound. This spot boasts stunning waterfront views and an enticing menu that celebrates fresh local ingredients. You frequently see locals celebrating life's special events at this restaurant. It is on the second floor of the main building of the Leverick Bay Resort, with lovely sunset views.

Their menu is a mix of local seafood, steaks and fresh Anegada Lobster. I splurged on their grilled lobster, which was precisely cooked and bursting with flavor. They have an extensive wine list and pour an excellent martini. The restaurant is open Saturday to Thursday during the season. If you’re lucky enough to visit on a Friday, don’t miss their famous Caribbean BBQ night with a whole roasted pig, live music and flame dancers. It’s a real treat for the senses!

Saba Rock: Culinary Magic with a View

Dining with a Sunset View at Saba Rock, North Sound, Virgin Gorda BVI

Saba Rock is not just a restaurant; it’s an experience! Situated on its namesake island at the northern end of North Sound, this eatery boasts spectacular views and a laid-back atmosphere. Completely demolished during Hurricane Irma, Saba Rock was slow to rebuild. It was definitely worth the wait. It is a gorgeous open air space.

The menu showcases a delightful mix of Caribbean and international cuisines. It is open for lunch, dinner and the upstairs bar has a nice Happy Hour. The lunch menu has burgers, fish sandwiches and several types of ceviche. The dinner menu has a variety of mains including steaks, lamb and a vegan option. The star of the dinner menu is Caribbean Lobster, with three options on preparation. I ordered the Seafood Linguine with the lobster swimming in white wine and butter. Arrive early for happy hour and tarpon feeding, stay for dinner and the sunset. Dining while watching the sun setting over the water? Pure magic!

Bitter End Yacht Club: A Taste of Tradition

Last but certainly not least in North Sound is the Bitter End Yacht Club, a place that blends nautical charm with delicious dining. The Bitter End yacht Club has stood proudly at the far side of North sound for nearly 50 years. It is a beloved and storied outpost for sailors. Destroyed in Hurricane Irma, restoration construction continues today.

Their restaurant and bars are open and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. While we have not had dinner there yet, we had an excellent cappuccino and pastry as we watched the mooring field wake up. Excellent coffee is a bit and llusive in the British Virgin Islands. I was so happy to taste the rich creaminess of a well prepared cappuccino. The casual vibe and friendly service made it an ideal spot for a relaxed meal before a day of sailing. The combination of a fresh baked muffin and a soothing cappuccino had my taste buds dancing, and the laid-back atmosphere sealed the deal!

Coco Maya: An International Culinary Fiesta

Coco Maya is like stepping into a tropical paradise. This beachside hotspot is known for its chic atmosphere and stunning sunset views. It is located in Spanish Town Virgin Gorda, a short distance from the Bath's. They have sweeping views of the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea and Tortola and other smaller islands. Their contemporary, barefoot chic, open air dining room puts the focus on the views and the food.

Their innovative take on Latin and Asian cuisine had me hooked from the first bite. From Guacamole, Duck Nachos and Plantains to Tempura Shrimp lettuce Wraps, Crispy Tuna Rice Cakes and Thai Green Curry, we indulged in array of Caribbean flavored Asian and Latin delights. Definitely try one of their vibrant cocktails. They make it a perfect spot to unwind after a day of island hopping!

Restaurants Accessible by Sea

The Restaurant at Cooper Island Beach Resort: A Taste of Sustainable Luxury

If you’re looking for a dining experience that aligns with eco-conscious values, look no further than the resort The Restaurant at Cooper Island Beach Resort. Self sufficient in power and water, their sustainable tourism practices are incorporated into their daily operations creating a unique eco lux experience. They have cultivated the sea grass in the mooring field, practicality guaranteeing snorkelers will see sting rays and sea turtles.

The resort is home to the only 100% solar powered brewery in the Caribbean as well as a bar serving a variety of island theme craft cocktails. There is a Rum Bar, Ice Cream and Coffee Shop, Gift Shop and an international fusion restaurant. This beach front, open air restaurant serves delectable dishes made from locally sourced ingredients.

Our older grandsons were thrilled to see Red Curry on the menu while our friends from college were thrilled with their burgers. I savored a meal of fresh fish and chips, all while enjoying the breathtaking views of the secluded beach. It’s an absolute must for food lovers who appreciate sustainability! They offer a happy hour daily from 3pm-5pm.(check the times at the bar, they can vary.)

Resort Restaurants

ree

CaptK and I have not stayed on land in the British Virgin Islands in nine years. Between Hurricane Irma, the shutdown for Covid and the increased popularity of the British Virgin Islands the landscape of accommodations has changed dramatically. I have not eaten in any of these restaurants but they have gotten excellent reviews from yachtsman and land lovers alike.

Scrub Island Resort

Cardamom & Company is a fine dining establishment in the Scrub Island Resort. The offer a wide array of seafood, vegetarian and steak menu items. For Boaters, Scrub Island does have a marina. You are welcome to use all the resort amenities with an overnight stay in the marina.

Peter Island Resort

Peter Island Resort was demolished by Hurricane Irma. It has just reopened this in 2024. I have heard outstanding reviews of the Drake Steakhouse. They offer prime and waygu steaks, seafood, pasta and a vegetarian option. Boaters have access to the resort if they stay overnight in the marina. Boaters utilizing mooring balls are required to pay a resort fee if they would like to access the resort amenities.

Oil Nut Bay

Oil Nut Bay is a luxury community and resort on the east side of North Sound Virgin Gorda. They offer mariners berths and mooring balls for nightly rental. A resort fee is required for access to the amenities. Nova Restaurant is oceanfront fine dining in the Marina Village at Oil Nut Bay. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as Sunday Brunch. For dinner they offer a diverse menu with steaks, seafood, sushi and other Asian dishes. The atmosphere is what sets Nova apart, you dine overwater, open air, surrounded by lush verdant hills.

Biras Marina & Resort

While there are numerous places to get sushi in the British Virgin Islands, Ikigai at Biras Resort is the only Omakase Restaurant in the British Virgin Islands. There is only one seating per evening offering a 12 course Japanese-Caribbean sushi meal for $280 per person. There are only 12 seats so reservations are a must. Biras Marina has slips and mooring balls for boaters who wish to overnight there. This is the most unique dining experience in the British Virgin Islands.

Little Dix Bay

If you like the Omakase style or multiple coursed dinners but you prefer your food cooked not raw, check out the Chef's Table at Rosewoid's Little Dix Bay Resort on Virgin Gorda. It is a 10 course meal with all the focus on Caribbean Flavors. Local seafood, meats and vegetables combine with Caribbean spices to tell the story of modern island cuisine. The cost is $425 per person and seating is limited to 6 people.

The resort has two additional fine dining restaurants, The Sugar Mill predominantly a seafood restaurant and The Pavillon offers a variety dishes including aged steaks. The Sugar Mill also has a location in the Sugar Mill Hotel in Apple Bay on Tortola.
