Capt K and I cruised the Canal du Midi in late September. Although we have been ocean bareboating (cruising on a small yacht without a professional Captain or Crew) for 10 years, we discovered the ultimate, slow travel adventure on the picturesque Canal du Midi.

In France, wine production is controlled by 363 AOCs is short for Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. These are 363 AOCs control everything from how the grapes are grown to what wine varieties are in the bottle. The Languedoc region (most of the vineyards surrounding the Canal du Midi are in the Languedoc Region) includes the Corbières AOC, which produces predominantly red wines blended from Syrah, Mourvedre (a German red varietal) and Grenache. Also, we tasted a lovely white Corbières.
An interesting wine produced in this area is the sparkling wine, Crémant de Limoux made mostly with Chardonnay grapes. It is said that Dom Perignon originally started producing sparkling wine at a monastery in the south of France before heading north to Champagne. We did try some and found it had a clean, fresh bubbly taste, that we enjoyed.
The largest AOC in Languedoc is the Minervois AOC. It is blended predominately from from Syrah, Mourvedre, and Grenache. This easy to drink, red wine is widely available throughout France at a reasonable price. This was our go-to wine when ordering a bottle in restaurants.
